TRevPAB calculator

Work out your hostel's total revenue per available bed: everything you earned, from beds, café, tours and add-ons, divided by every bed-night you could have sold. Enter your total revenue and available bed-nights, or break it down by beds, days and revenue. The result updates as you type.

Beds plus everything else: café, bar, tours, laundry and events, excluding GST.

Sellable beds × days in the period, e.g. 60 beds × 30 days = 1,800.

Definition

What is TRevPAB?

TRevPAB (total revenue per available bed) is the total revenue a property earns for each bed-night it had available. It counts every rupee of income, not just bed sales, and every bed you could have sold, not just the ones you did.

Hostels and dorm-led properties use beds instead of rooms because that's what they sell. A 6-bed dorm can hold six separate guests on six separate bookings. Measuring it as one room would hide most of what happens in it, so room-based metrics like RevPAR and TRevPAR don't fit.

The TRevPAB formula

TRevPAB = total revenue ÷ available bed-nights

Available bed-nights = beds × days in the period. Total revenue is everything the property earned in those days, excluding GST: dorm beds, private rooms, café and bar, tours, laundry, lockers and any other income.

A common convention for counting beds is to count every sellable bed. A 6-bed dorm counts as 6. Private rooms count by the beds in them, so a private room with two single beds counts as 2. Whatever you choose, use the same rule every month so your numbers stay comparable.

A worked example

A hostel has 60 beds. Over a 30-day month that's 60 × 30 = 1,800 available bed-nights. It earns ₹6,48,000 from beds and ₹1,62,000 from its café, tours and add-ons, a total of ₹8,10,000.

Its TRevPAB is ₹8,10,000 ÷ 1,800 = ₹450. Its RevPAB, counting bed revenue only, is ₹6,48,000 ÷ 1,800 = ₹360. Non-bed income makes up 20% of total revenue.

If the café brings in another ₹1,800 a day, that's ₹54,000 more for the month and TRevPAB rises to ₹480, without selling a single extra bed.

Why total revenue matters for hostels

Hostel bed rates are usually lower than hotel room rates, so the money made outside the dorm counts for more. A guest who books a ₹500 bed and then spends on breakfast, a walking tour and laundry can be worth far more than the bed alone. TRevPAB captures that spend; bed-only metrics miss it.

It also helps when you're making decisions about space. Turning a dorm into a common room, adding a café counter or converting dorm beds into private rooms all change both sides of the formula. TRevPAB lets you compare the months before and after on the same footing.

Grow every bed

6 ways to increase your TRevPAB

TRevPAB grows two ways: earn more from each bed, and earn more from each guest once they've checked in.

Run a café or bar

Breakfast, coffee and evening drinks turn common areas into revenue. Guests already on site are the easiest customers you'll get.

Sell tours and experiences

Walking tours, day trips, pub crawls and local activities. Run them yourself or partner with local operators for a commission.

Get the private room mix right

Private rooms usually earn more per bed than dorms. Review which room types sell out first and adjust your mix over time.

Price dorm beds by demand

Raise bed rates on weekends, festival dates and peak season, and stop selling every night at the same price.

Win group bookings

School trips, sports teams and travelling groups fill whole dorms at once. A clear group rate makes them easy to say yes to.

Charge for useful add-ons

Lockers, laundry, towels, linen and late checkout are small charges guests expect, and they add up across every bed.

Related metrics

TRevPAB vs TRevPAR, bed occupancy and RevPAB

TRevPAB is most useful read alongside the metrics that explain where it came from.

TRevPAB vs TRevPAR

Both divide total revenue by what you had available. TRevPAR divides by room-nights, TRevPAB by bed-nights. Use TRevPAR if you sell whole rooms and TRevPAB if you sell beds. If you run a mix, pick one and stay with it, because the two can't be compared directly. Calculate your TRevPAR.

TRevPAB vs bed occupancy

Bed occupancy tells you how full you were: bed-nights sold ÷ bed-nights available. TRevPAB tells you how much each available bed earned. If the hostel above sold 1,350 of its 1,800 bed-nights, its bed occupancy was 75%. A full hostel selling cheap beds with no extras can still have a low TRevPAB. Calculate your occupancy rate.

RevPAB vs TRevPAB

RevPAB counts bed revenue only; TRevPAB adds everything else. The gap between them shows how much your café, tours and add-ons contribute. In the example, RevPAB is ₹360 and TRevPAB is ₹450, so non-bed income adds ₹90 for every available bed-night. Running a hostel? See how ClearHost works for hostels.

TRevPAB questions

TRevPAB, answered

There's no single good TRevPAB: it depends on your city, season, dorm and private room mix, and what you sell besides beds. A good TRevPAB is one that's rising against the same period last year, especially if non-bed revenue is growing as a share of the total.
A common convention is to count the sellable beds in it, so a private room with two single beds counts as 2. Some properties count a double bed as 2 because it sleeps two guests. Either works, as long as you use the same rule every month.
No. Use revenue excluding GST. Tax is collected on behalf of the government, so including it would overstate what each bed earns.
Every income line that isn't a bed sale: café and bar, tours and activities, laundry, lockers, towel and linen hire, late checkout charges, event space and commissions from partners.
Use TRevPAB if you sell beds, as most hostels do. Use TRevPAR if you sell whole rooms. The calculation is the same; only the unit changes.
Monthly works well for most hostels, once all café, tour and add-on income for the period is in. Compare each month with the same month last year so seasonality doesn't distort the picture.
